Australian Plants Society - Warrnambool and District

Overview

We are a community group dedicated to the preservation of Australian native plants, both in their natural environments and in gardens. By encouraging Australian gardeners to plant native species we aim to improve gardens as habitat for native birds and marsupials. Native plants are adapted to our dry climate and nutrient poor soils and so require less water and fertiliser input. Over 300 species are grown in members gardens in Warrnambool and its surroundings.

At our monthly meeting (8pm on the 4th Friday at Mozart Hall) members display native species flowering in their gardens and we often have a guest speaker. Through the year we have other activities including garden visits and field trips to enjoy native plants in settings like the Grampians or other National Parks.

In co-operation with other groups we contribute to revegetation projects in our region and have produced information booklets on weeds, the region's reserves and water sensitive gardens. A substantial reference book "Plants of the Great Southwest" has been produced by one of our members.

We would welcome new members who share these interests.
