Our club is about engaging members of the community in the construction and rowing of St Ayles Skiffs. Not only recreational but also health and well-being are a major objective for our group. As well as rowing for enjoyment, fitness and health we also promote a message specific to stroke awareness given our roots in Whaleboat rowing as a hospital based team calling itself the Stroke Team because most of our members worked as part of the hospital's stroke team.
Now we have one skiff launched and another being built. While Flagstaff Hill is closed for redevelopment (May/June 2017)we cannot access our second build but once they reopen we'll be down at the Shipwright's Building within the Museum precinct almost every Saturday morning. Get in touch if you'd like to come and check out our progress.
Nationally there are 14 St Ayles Skiffs launched with almost as many being built. The Skiff community is vibrant and growing which sees clubs engaging with others across the country. It's a great time to get involved in this burgeoning grass roots, community activity.
'Come & Try' - our members like to row 'Fast Messenger' (our first skiff) every second Sunday. The next planned row is at the Hopkins River from 10 am 4 June 2017 departing from the ramp nearest to Lyndoch. Get in touch if you'd like to come and try on any of these fortnightly rows. Victorian St Ayles Skiff Championships: planning for the 2018 regatta now with late February the likely date. Hopkins River, Proudfoots Boathouse, Warrnambool. As with the inaugural Victorian St Ayles Skiff Championships held on the 4th of March 2017 the Australian Whaleboat Championships will combine to form the South West Regatta, also in February 2018. The Geelong Wooden Boat Festival is on 10-12th March 2018 and there will be some significant St Ayles Skiff activities going on including a proposed 'raid' from Port Arlington to the Geelong Yacht Club. We hope to have our second skiff built and launched by then allowing the Warrnambool Skiff Club to have both of our boats on display and participating in all the activities.
